Monday is Presidents Day which is a federal holiday. Originally it was held on George Washington’s birthday (February 22). But in 1971 it was moved to the third Monday in February to honor all former presidents.

But it’s one of those confusing holidays. Here’s an attempt to share openings and closings:

  • Schools – Most schools are describing it as a “student holiday” and “staff development.”
  • Financial institutions – While the Federal Reserve Bank, the stock market and major banks are generally closed, ATM’s and online services will be up for business.
  • Federal offices – Federal courts and offices like the passport bureau. Mail will not be delivered and post offices will be closed.
  • State offices – While most state offices will only be partially staffed, no Texas Department of Public Safety offices including driver license services will be open. However, State troopers will be on duty.
  • County offices – County courts and offices will be open.
  • City offices – City offices and courts will be closed. Garbage and recycling will be collected for residences, but Sanitation Administrative Office will be closed.
  • Retailers – They are wide open for business with types of sales.
