According to Girl Scouts Of Northeast Texas Volunteer Jennifer Ottinger,

“Volunteering with Girl Scouts was a natural choice for me. Growing up as a Girl Scout, I have countless memories that helped me decide to be a volunteer.
“As a Girl Scout, I tried many new things, learned to get out of my comfort zone and had the best time of my life at camp. I feel lucky that I have a daughter to share this amazing experience with but will still be an active volunteer with Girl Scouts even after she goes off to college.
“Family, friend, or just a fantastic community member who wants to invest in the future of a girl’s life, Girl Scouts is a place to put your heart into volunteering. Today’s Girl Scouts are multifaceted go-getters. They learn confidence and entrepreneurship at a young age then use those same stills as they grow up to be business leaders, skilled champions, and leaders in their community. Not only do the girls fit these many roles, but so do the volunteers.

“By volunteering, I can help showcase my expertise or just hold the hand of a girl who’s a little nervous about trying something new. I can expose the girls to a multitude of experiences to lay a groundwork of opportunities that are out there for them. By providing experiences, a girl can be exposed to something she’s never thought about or heard about. I may not be an engineer, physician, chef, or artist, but I find professionals so the girls can see those opportunities as possibilities.

“Throughout my time volunteering with Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas, I am also benefiting. I’ve expanded my knowledge on a wide variety of topics. I’ve become braver when I stand up to the challenges alongside the girls. I have learned that outdoor experience is still essential in life and that learning a new skill can be daunting, but a whole lot of fun.
“I have become an active member of the community, trying to make a difference—in myself, the girls around me, and the world I live in. Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas allows me to provide experiences for the girls that will last a lifetime and make a difference.
“My wish is for other community members to realize the value and positive personal impact volunteering for Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas provides them in addition to the girls. There are many ways to volunteer:
- “Be a troop leader
- “Be a monthly volunteer
- “Be a short-term volunteer
- “Be a troop volunteer
- “Be a troop cookie manager
- “Be a service unit volunteer
- “Be a camp/seasonal volunteer
- “Serve as a career mentor as part of the Leadership Institute (GSLI) Job Shadow program
